Frequently asked questions

What Signeret records and which official steps remain separate.

What is a private sale agreement?+

It is a record of the parties, item, condition, price, payment and handover terms agreed in a private transaction.

Does the agreement complete the official transfer?+

No. Both parties must complete the current NZTA change-of-registered-person process separately. A registered person is not necessarily the legal owner.

Can we sign electronically?+

Electronic signatures can generally evidence an ordinary private agreement when identity, intent, reliability and any applicable consent or formality requirements are satisfied. A prescribed government form can still require a different method.

What inspection evidence should we check?+

Review the current Warrant of Fitness (WoF), any independent inspection and the parties’ own observations separately. An earlier inspection is not a guarantee of present condition.

How do we check finance or third-party rights?+

Search the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) using the relevant seller and vehicle identifiers, and resolve a registered security interest before payment.

Which items are supported?+

Cars, motorcycles, trailers, caravans, boats, mopeds or scooters, and collectibles.

Is the service free?+

The completed PDF download is free. The optional two-party digital-signing flow costs $4.99; the exact total and any applicable tax are shown before payment.

Can I add photographs?+

Yes. Add useful photographs of identifiers, included items and visible condition with the appropriate permission.

Are there local exceptions?+

Private sales have fewer protections than trader sales. The Consumer Guarantees Act and Fair Trading Act generally do not cover a genuine private sale, while Contract and Commercial Law Act rights can still matter.
